These Walls - Dream Theater

The entire Octavarium album from Dream Theater is epic. In the literal meaning of the word. Just like the last album I talked about a while back (Metropolis Part 2). It's a bit of a concept album. But this one is all about the Fibonacci sequence. You know: 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 and so on. The golden ratio is woven through the album as well.

The entire album is worth a listen, 'Panic Attack' is very powerful, but 'These Walls' captivates me in a unique way. Mike Portnoy, does some drummer wizardry on this track. The time signature is 6/8, making it sound kind of like a waltz, and the way he drums it makes it sound very open and wide. Yet the lyrics are so dark, yet there's light at the end of the tunnel. Powerful song, powerful album. Listen to the full album if you've never heard it before. The final track 'Octavarium' is a woppin' 20 minutes long and has a lot of Pink Floyd influences woven through it.

Maybe one day I'll post some posts about entire albums instead of just separate tracks, as this album has a special place in my heart (or should I say ears).
